Carer Support

There are a number of agencies, both local and national, offering support for people caring for a family member or friend with a disability or a chronic illness. They could be caring for someone full-time, or providing regular or occasional help such as shopping or cooking.

Carers may receive support in a variety of ways:

financial help through benefits.
practical help for the person being cared for.
advice and guidance.
the opportunity to take a break from caring.
flexible working arrangements.
the opportunity to join a group of carers in a similar situation.
training courses.
activities and trips.

Carers have the right to receive a Carer's Assessment from their local Social Services department. This is aimed at making caring easier by providing help and support to the carer and the person being cared for.
