Food supplements are used to alleviate problems with appetite and/or swallowing when someone is ill. They come in many forms such as drinks to sip, mousses and soups. There are also specialist feeds to insert down a tube such as a gastrostomy or PEG (percutaneous entero gastrostomy) or RIG (radiologically inserted gastrostomy).
Each type of supplement has the correct balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates and vitamins to sustain life and can even help a person to regain weight in some instances.
They are available from the NHS by prescription.
