Gastrostomy is also known as a PEG (percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy) or RIG (radiologically inserted gastrostomy).
A gastrostomy is an opening directly into the stomach to allow feeding via a small tube or "button" when swallowing is not possible. It is applicable to many types of illnesses. Large hospitals usually provide specialist help and support if a gastrostomy is advised.
Sometimes they become a permanent fixture but they are often temporary.
