The spinal cord is a long bundle of nerves which stretches from the brain to the lower part of the back. The bones of the spine are called vertebrae and they surround and protect the spinal cord.
Spinal cord compression happens when there is pressure on the spinal cord. It can be caused by cancer, injury to the spinal cord, weakening of the bones (osteoporosis) or infection. If you have cancer and are at risk of developing spinal cord compression your doctor should tell you what symptoms to look out for and who to contact if you have any of them.
It can be successfully managed with drugs called steroids and, most importantly, radiotherapy.
