Travelling by train can be difficult if you are disabled. Arrangements can usually be made for staff to meet you at your departure station, accompany you to the train and see you safely on board. Similar arrangements can be made at your destination station and other stations if you need to change trains. Ramps can be provided for wheelchair users.
The train companies are better able to help you if you contact them as far in advance of your journey as possible.
If you have a disability that makes travelling by train difficult you may qualify for the Disabled Persons Railcard. The Railcard allows you - and an adult companion - to get 1/3 off most rail fares throughout Great Britain. There is a charge for the card - a one year card costs £20. If you use it for a journey that usually costs £60, you will save £20and the card will have paid for itself. A three year card is also available for £54. You must provide proof that you qualify for this Railcard. You might qualify if you: have a visual impairment or a hearing impairment or have epilepsy or are in receipt of a disability-related benefit.
