Tough challenge raises cash for hospice - 05/06/2008

A team of climbers tested their stamina on one of the hottest days of the year by climbing three peaks in just 12 hours. Ten staff from Melksham-based audio services provider Sound Marketing set out to do the Yorkshire Three Peaks Walk on 10 May, both as a team-building exercise and to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care.
Associate director Richard Ford said: “The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge involves walking just over 24 miles, ascending 5,000 feet and climbing three summits – Pen-y-ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough – all within 12 hours.
“We knew it would be tough, and the warm weather made it even more of a challenge, but it was good fun. It feels good to have completed the event, and we are really pleased to have raised more than £1,300 for Dorothy House.
The team, whose ages range from mid-20s to mid-50s, set themselves an initial fundraising target of £500, but have raised nearly three times that amount.
Dorothy House corporate fundraiser Phillippa Watson said: “Congratulations to the Sound Marketing team on completing such a tough challenge – and raising so much money for us in the process. It’s always good to hear about companies taking a creative approach to fundraising, and organising events that benefit everyone.”

Bright Start - 28/05/2008
A walk to raise money for the hospice movement nationwide takes place this Sunday (June 1), with the local event supporting Dorothy House Hospice Care.
Walking on the Bright Side was set up last year by Lesley Lay, whose sister-in-law Gill Goodhind died of cancer in September 2006.
Lesley says: “Gill’s last few days were spent at Dorothy House, in Winsley, where she was able to die with dignity and was shown so much love and care, and also where we as a family were treated with such humanity.
“In Gill’s memory, I wanted to provide an opportunity to give something back to hospices throughout the UK, and came up with the idea of Walking On The Bright Side. This involves asking every hospice in the UK to get one of their supporters to organise a team of a minimum of 10 people to take part in a 10K fundraising walk in their locality, aiming to raise a minimum of £50 per walker. Each walk will start at the same time on the same day, all over the UK.”
Sunday’s circular walk starts at 10.30am from Dorothy House car park, and walkers can register on the day. Lesley says: “The route takes in some wonderful scenery including the Kennet & Avon Canal towpath, fields, woodland and country lanes. The walk is fairly flat, although there are a couple of steep inclines, and the recent rain means it may be very muddy underfoot.”
Car parking is available at Dorothy House, and walkers are asked to assemble at 10.15am, ready for a 10.30am start.
For more details, go to the official Walking on the Bright Side website.

Weekend Washout - 27/05/2008
High winds and torrential downpours meant last weekend’s open garden at Conock Manor, near Devizes, had to be cancelled at the last minute. The garden was to have opened in aid of Dorothy House Hospice Care, and community fundraiser Paula Smith said: “We are so sorry Lady Sykes was unable to open her garden as planned, and offer our apologies to visitors who turned up and were disappointed.
“We hope the weather will improve over the next few weeks, as dozens of our supporters are taking part in this year’s Dorothy House open gardens season.”
A leaflet detailing many of the gardens is now available from fundraising on 01225 721480, and the Open Gardens website has a regularly updated list of gardens taking part.
If you would like to open your garden for Dorothy House this summer, please call Paula on the number above.

Dressed to impress! - 23/05/2008
The Plough at Bradford Leigh has come up with a brilliant fundraising venure - they are selling their own special salad dressing (made to a secret recipe) and donating the profits to Dorothy House.

The dressing is hand made on the premises from the finest, organic if possible, ingredients. Dorothy 'The Flying Chef' from the pub said "The tantalizing flavours have been wowing customers at the pub, so we have decided to sell the dressing to the customers and donate all the profit to the Hospice."
The salad dressing - which goes by the name of Dottie's Dribble can be bought for just £2.00 a jar from the pub. Further details can be found on the pub's website.

Bluesmen stop for a cuppa - 23/05/2008
Jake and Elwood Blues gave their support to the Dorothy House t@3 Appeal today (Monday 19 May) when they held a Tea Party in their Chevy Caprice Illinois State Police Car at the Theatre Royal Bath.

The performers stopped for tea on Monday ahead of their appearance in The Best Blues Brothers Show in the World – Ever! which is coming to the Theatre Royal on Sunday 25th May. The stars of the show - who are officially known as ‘Joliet’ Jake Blues and Elwood Jake Blues – backed the T@3 Appeal in their own unique way and they are encouraging others to join in the fun.

Elwood Blues, said,

“This is a fantastic way to raise money for an important local charity, so come on people, Shake Your Tail Feathers, and start planning your own Tea Party today! You could catch up with old friends through T@3 - or even meet some new ones. Why not try something a little bit different - we had a Tea Party in our Chevy Caprice which was a new experience for us!”

Dorothy House Hospice Care hopes that people all over Bath, Wiltshire and Somerset will be brewing up this summer to raise funds. Dozens of t@3 events are already planned in schools, workplaces, village halls and gardens – and Dorothy House would like to encourage even more people to take part.

Paula Smith, Community Fundraiser at Dorothy House Hospice, said,

“We had great support for t@3 last year, with £10,000 raised by our generous supporters. This year we’d like to do even better – so if you would like to hold an event, please get in touch. Anyone can host a tea party, at any time from now until September: and you don’t even have to serve afternoon tea – morning coffee is fine, if you prefer.”

If you would like to hold a t@3 party for Dorothy House or if you have any questions, then e-mail the Fundraising team.
