The Pip Dewey Dorothy House Bridge Tournament raised more than £4,000 for the hospice in the 2010/11 season – £3,485 from donations made when players signed up to participate in the winter tournament and £584 from the bridge tea party held in June.
Seventy-nine pairs of players took part in the tournament, which runs from September to March. The participants are in groups of six couples and can arrange to play their 20 hands of rubber bridge with the others in their group at any time over the winter period – resulting in some friendly bridge along with welcome fundraising for Dorothy House.
Winners of each group are announced in the spring and the overall winners are presented with the Pip Dewey Trophy – a very elegant glass bowl on which all the winners’ names are engraved.
To round off the season this year, 40 people attended the bridge tea at Winsley in June – and enjoyed an afternoon of bridge followed by a delicious tea and a raffle with some excellent prizes donated by generous businesses in Bath and Bradford on Avon.
The afternoon ended with Molly Worlidge, the season’s organiser, talking about how Pip Dewey gave her name to the tournament, and presenting the trophy to this year’s winners, Myles and Daphne Marchington (pictured).
