Fourteen cyclists will be setting off on a 50-mile ride to the coast at the end of September, to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice Care. The team, from the Royal Oak in Oakfield Road, Frome, are cycling to Bournemouth on September 27. Pub landlord Brendan Carley said: “We decided to raise funds for Dorothy House because several of our customers over the years have had a connection with the hospice. We have 14 regulars taking part, aged from 22 to early 60s. We expect the ride to take fiver to six hours – and we’ll be stopping for a breather every ten miles or so: there are quite a few hills between here and the coast!” For more information, contact Brendan Carley on 01373 463520

Feel like doing something dotty for your local hospice? This year’s Dotty Day is on Friday 10 October – and it’s your chance to raise funds for Dorothy House in any dotty way you like: the only limit is your imagination. Dorothy House community fundraiser Paula Smith said: “Dotty Day is a chance for our supporters to get really creative with fundraising ideas – you could get your class or workmates to pay to wear dotty clothes for the day, hold a sponsored Twister, dominoes or tiddley winks marathon, make and sell dotty fairy cakes, or guess the number of Smarties or Jelly Tots in a tube. “You could also hold a competition for the greatest number of tiny objects you can pack into a mini Dotty Box: we can send out as many as you need for your event – just give us a call on (01225) 721480.” Dotty Day fundraising packs will be available soon – so to request one, and to register your event, call Paula or Yvonne in fundraising on the number above, or email the fundraising team.

A colourful crew set off from the Dog and Fox in Bradford on Avon on August bank holiday – and raised £200 for Dorothy House Hospice Care. The motley bunch were taking part in the pub’s annual fancy dress charity cycle ride. This year, 55 fearless pirates – including numerous children and a small terrier – rode to South Wraxall and back. The ride has been going for 20 years, with each entrant paying £1 to take part. Mary Clark, a pub customer, said: “The route is all on lanes and tracks - apart from a mass crossing from Periwinkle Lane to Cumberwell – so it's great fun for everybody and very safe. We always have lots of children taking part, as well as people who don't usually cycle very much. Gypsy the dog started off in a back pack, but soon decided she'd rather run all the way.” The cyclists enjoyed a barbecue when they arrived at South Wraxall Club, and another on their return to the Dog and Fox – along with a raffle that helped to boost the amount raised for the Winsley-based hospice.

People are going dotty all over west Wiltshire in support of their local hospice. Friday 10 October is this year’s Dotty Day, when Dorothy House supporters pull out all the stops to fundraise for the Winsley-based charity. Among those taking part this year are Diamond News, in St Thomas’ Road, Trowbridge, where staff will be dressing up in dotty clothes, running a dotty raffle and other games, and selling dotty cakes. Owner Cathy Wyllie hopes customers will come in to support what promises to be a fun-filled day. Local government staff will also be supporting Dotty Day again this year, with employees at County Hall and at West Wiltshire District Council in Bradley Road organising all kinds of dotty events to raise funds and awareness. And Selwood Housing, which has adopted Dorothy House as its charity of the year, will be organising activities and asking staff to donate cash to come to work in dotty attire. If you would like to organise a Dotty Day event, please call Yvonne or Paula on 01225 721480 for a special dotty fundraising pack.
