Nurse Specialist Service

Is a specialist nursing advisory service for people who have cancer and other life threatening illnesses.

Dorothy House Nurse Specialists (previously called Macmillan Nurses) are Registered Nurses with specialist training and knowledge of palliative care.

They help patients and their families adjust to changes in lifestyle, caused by a life-threatening illness. The nurses may get involved with people when they are undergoing treatment, on discharge from hospital, on recurrence of the illness or in the final phase of life. They offer expertise and advice on:

  • Pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Breathlessness
  • Sleeping/eating problems
They offer:
  • Emotional and spiritual support
  • Support for families and carers
  • Support during bereavement
The Nurse Specialists work closely with general practitioners, community nurses, hospital staff and other health professionals. They are actively involved in education of other health professionals locally and nationally.
