This course explores issues in relation to pain management, symptoms of nausea, and the terminal phase, including sedation, restlessness and management of secretions through the use of case studies. The course is aimed at all health care and social care professionals aiming to increase their knowledge and skill in relation to syringe driver use.

The day considers the impact of death and dying on individuals and their families; explores the factors that contribute to the complexity of end of life care conversations and reviews key skills for effective communication.
It will also identify strategies to develop, manage and maintain effective communication in difficult situations and consider the need for a range of support strategies within your work environments.

An opportunity to find out more about palliative care and the work of Dorothy House Hospice Care. Includes a tour of the hospice.

The day identifies and explores the challenges in the assessment and management of pain at the end of life, from pharmacological and non-pharmacological perspectives.

Introduction to Syringe Driver (McKinley) - Thursday 11th June 2015 (am)
Explores the ‘what, when, why, where and how’ of syringe driver use, including practical ‘hands-on’ experience. Includes identification of common problems and troubleshooting techniques, as well as where to access further support. Aimed at all health care professionals with limited or no knowledge of syringe driver management.
Suitable for: Hospital, community and nursing home nurses; GPs.

Loss and Transition - Thursday 17th September 2015
This day considers the impact of life limiting illness, loss and death on patients/families and children and will examine a range of models of bereavement and assess their contribution to the understanding of grief.
The day also explores interventions which may help to support people through loss and bereavement, as well as identifying factors which may complicate grief and consideration of appropriate responses.

The day identifies common symptoms which might be experienced at the end of life. The assessment and management of these symptoms will be explored through pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches to care.

This study day will give participants the opportunity to explore the distinction and overlap between religion and spirituality; examine the notion of spirituality within an end of life context; consider the concept of 'meaning'; identify roles and responsibilities in the provision of spiritual care; and examine diversity and difference.

The closing date for all our courses is 2 weeks prior to the date of the course. The course fees include refreshments and a light luncheon (where appropriate).
Cancellation fees will be charged at 50% within 2 weeks of the date and 100% within 48 hours.
If there are insufficient bookings for a course Dorothy House reserves the right to cancel. This decision will be taken no later than 1 week before the course date and all potential participants will be informed as soon as possible – all fees will be refunded.
